SOLIDARITY WITH SERBIAN ANARCHO-SYNDICALISTS

Six anarchists have been arrested in Belgrade following an attack on the Greek Embassy the 24th of April. The attack was claimed by a previously unknown group, and was said to be in solidarity with the recent uprising against the Greek state.
Those arrested deny all knowledge of the group and the attack, and believe that this is an attempt to criminalise the growing Serbian anarchist movement. The activists are members of the Serbian section of the International Workers’ Association. They have been remanded in custody for 30 days while the Serbian state prepares its case.
If convicted, these activists face long prison sentences.

Για τις μεθόδους διαμαρτυρίας. On protest methods

Για τις μεθόδους διαμαρτυρίας. On protest methods

A few thoughts:
Very specific protest methods must be used in this case, which is complicated. The general strategy is to make sure the maximum possible number of people learn about the case, with moderate symbolic solidarity actions that will be repeated over and over and should continue for as long as possible.
What matters is not the intensity of the protests but the long-running duration and massivity of the solidarity movement, which should be uncompromising and demand the immediate release of the arrestees. The aim is the final and permanent release of the Belgrade Six. It is a simple goal that can be attained with the methods described here.
Solidarity at first can be expressed with republishing and translating texts and announcements, putting up web banners, and through Facebook groups. Meanwhile, discussions at the various social centres could take place, together with assemblies, but also sending protest letters. After lots of people learn about the case, peaceful marches and protests could pop up with witty banners, together with public talks, and of course distributing leaflets and putting on posters. At some point they will be unable to not pay attention to the peaceful but massive and uncompromising solidarity movement. In the beginning an event may occur aiming to raise fear amongst us, but we will carry on and we will not stop protesting until they leave them free.
It is important to take initiative, as long as it is right. If you do not know whether an idea is good, talk about it with others! It is important not to be afraid, be brave, and take care not to do something foolish. So, let us put all our imagination and spontaneity, along with our forethought and common sense, let us network with other comrades who work on this case, and let us show our solidarity in our own way with spontaneous organisation keeping our actions within the general ideas described here, and if all these come forth then victory will be simply a matter of time. We must breathe enthusiasm!

Serbian Anarchosyndicalists arrested

On the morning of Sept. 3rd 2009 the Serbian police arrested four comrades of „Anarhosindikalisticka inicijativa“ (ASI-IWA). The circumstances known so far let apprehend an extensive attempt of criminalization.

On Thursday morning the police attempted to execute two house searches in Belgrade. They tried to enter the apartment of comrade Tadej Kurepa without a valid search warrant. Tadej refused access and was further „asked“ to come along to the police station for a witness report. But instead of the announced entering on the records he was taken into custody at the police station. Also at comrade Ratibor Trivunac’s apartment a house search could not be conducted, beacause Ratibor was not at home. By phone the police asked him to come to the police station for interrogation. There he was also taken into custody. Even more questionable was the approach on Ivan Vulovic. Ivan was not at home – but therefore his father. Without hesitation the police detained Ivan’s father and informed Ivan that they would only set him free when Ivan would go into custody…

Meanwhile it was confirmed, that a fourth comrade – Sanje – was also detained. as well as a fifth person from Belgrade, who is however unknown to the ASI. Ivan suffers from epilepsy and already has had a fierce epileptic seizure at the police station Thursday nigth.

The story had apparently started with a Molotov cocktail at the Greek embassy, which was supposedly thrown by the anonymous group “Crni Ilija” in solidarity with the still imprisoned greek anarchist Thodoros Iliopoulos on Aug. 25th. Thodoros was arrested in the course of the weeks-lasting revolt, following the murder of 15-years-old Alexis in Greece.

All accusations and the detentions seem to be founded with this single Molotov cocktail. Just the next day the Serbian media had already perceived the culprits. The only frankly libertarian organisation in Serbia – the anarchosyndicalistic union ASI – was brougth into connection with the Molotov cocktail. Already on Aug. 27th the ASI had informed comrades worldwide, that the Serbian media wages a fully fledged campaign against the ASI and namely Ratibor.

All five persons are in custody of the police and will be brougth before a examining magistrate on Saturday morning, after expiration of the 48-hours term, who will then decide about a possible imprisonment on remand. The police detained all with the accusation of „causation of public danger“ and seem to attempt to construct a charge with the same wording.

The facts that the ASI is currently administrating the secretariat of the IWA, the anarchosyndicalistic „International Workers Association“ and that Ratibor Trivunac is their current general secretary of thr IWA are further striking details.

It remains to be seen, if the Serbian tribunal will cover the elusive methods of the police and remand our four comrades and the the other unknown person in custody. The ASI is striving for representation by counsel of the imprisoned and also the IWA secretariat is still functional and operated by the other comrades.

ASI speech during protest in Belgrade

On September, 4th 2009 District Court judge in Belgrade ordered a measure of thirty days of detention to a group of six young people who were arrested on September, 3rd. They are accused of writing a graffiti on a wall and then throwing two Molotov cocktails on the Greek Embassy in Belgrade on August, 25th around 3 a.m.

Unusual circumstance concerning the acts of police and prosecution in this case is that the arrested are charged with a criminal offence of international terrorism. In criminal law of Republic of Serbia this offence is treated within the same group as, for example, genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes against civilian populace, organising and encouraging to commit genocide and war crimes, conducting an aggressive war, and similar.

Let us remind that the only person convicted for participation in last year’s burning of the American Embassy in Belgrade on February, 21st was charged only with a serious act against public safety, despite the fact that the embassy was heavily damaged and one of the persons who was in the convicted’s group died in the fire.

In a moment when rights and liberties in Serbia are being seriously narrowed by changes in criminal law and law on public informing a decision to charge the six arrested with international terrorism shows the intent of some state structures to discourage any political critique against its actions by stepping up the repression and misusing and misinterpreting its own laws. Because of this we express our solidarity with the arrested, demand that ridiculous charge be revoked and that they be immediately released.

Support action in Slovakia and police harrassment

Police harassment during solidarity action of Priama akcia-Bratislava (IWA/AIT Slovakia) in support of arrested Serbian anarchosyndicalists

On Monday, September 7th 2009, Priama akcia-Bratislava (IWA-AIT) organised a solidarity action in front of Serbian embassy in Bratislava.

Around 10 people gathered to meet with the ambassador and express their discontent with actions of Serbian authorities. The ambassador was not at the embassy. We told an employee of the embassy that we want him to make official record of the protest and to inform the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belgrade. We were told to put our protest letters in the mailbox and that they would deal with them. The whole conversation was conducted via the intercom at the embassy gate…

After the conversation with the voice from inside the embassy, one of the two to four “undercover” cops who was close to the protesters all the time (by the way, one cop or embassy employee filmed or took pictures of us via his cell phone:)) showed us his “diplomatic police” ID and asked people to identify themselves. We refused and after a short exchange about police competences we left without identifying ourselves. The cop said, however, that in that case he’d call the police.

Police harassment

We went down the street and after some 150 metres we saw a police car going our way. We didn’t want to be harassed again, so we turned to a city park (forest) and split into two groups. Within several seconds one of the groups of four people was approached by some 5-7 cops, who wanted to control our IDs. In the forest. The ID control took around 10-15 minutes and of course it was a targeted control as police didn’t control other passers-by. The original reason that the police came up with was “searching for a wanted or missing person”. In the end the policeman said that people’s ID information would be stored in some sort of a police system, so in case something happens around, the people could be asked to witness. Never mind the “wanted or missing person”… Let’s hope nothing happens in the forest today.

The solidarity starts just now

Despite this crazy police harassment, the protest letters were delivered to the embassy. The solidarity campaign is just at the beginning and won’t cease until people imprisoned in Serbia are freed and the charges dropped.

An attack on anarchosyndicalists is an attack on every struggling worker.

Solidarity to arrested comrades in Serbia!

Anarcho-syndicalists arrested for ‘international terrorism’ in Serbia

On Saturday, Sept. 4, five political activists were arrested in Belgrade on trumped up charges of ‘international terrorism.’

The five, Tadej Kurep, Ivan Vulović, Sanja Dojkić, Ratibor Trivunac and Nikola Mitrovic, are activists in or associates of the Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative, the Serbian section of the International Workers’ Association (IWA).

The arrests are allegedly related to a direct action which took place at the Greek Embassy on Aug. 25. Negligible damage was done; a crack in one window, a tiny burn mark on the facade and a circled-A graffiti on the embassy as a act of symbolic solidarity with Greek hunger-striker Thodoros Iliopoulos. The prosecutor however imagines this as an act of “international terrorism” and would like to charge our comrades with such. If the state allows such charges to be pressed, they could be facing 3-15 years in prison.

As it is, the five were arrested, harrassed and are to be held in custody for at least one month while the case is organized.

Although one of the accused, General Secretary of the IWA Ratibor Trivunac clearly and publically declared that he knew nothing of the action, he was arrested. It is not the first time that authorities have come after him or his comrades for no other reason than the fact that they are radical critics of the state.

There will be a picket of the London Embassy on Friday 11th, 12-2. Embassy is at 28 Belgrave Square, London, SW1X 8QB, nearest stations Victoria, Hyde Park Corner and Knightsbridge. Called by Solidarity Federation (the UK IWA section). Please bring banners, placards and black and red flags.

Anarchists Arrested in Belgrade – Solidarity Campaign Underway

From ZSP

On Sept. 4, 5 anarchists were arrested in Belgrade. The five, Tadej Kurep, Ivan Vulović, Sanja Dojkić, Ratibor Trivunac and Nikola Mitrovic may even be charged with “international terrorism” if the prosecutor’s office has its way.

The arrests are related to a direct action at the Greek Embassy in Belgrade made on Aug. 25. The action was related to the hunger strike of Thodoros Iliopoulos. Although this action was a big sensation in the press, in fact, almost no real damage was done to the Embassy; two Molotov cocktails were thrown, but they did not break the window and only one managed to catch fire. If you look really hard at the left window on these photos, you can see the extent of the damage: http://cia.bzzz.net/tak_wyglada_terroryzm.

This type of symbolic attack on property is not “terrorism”.

From what we know, the police arrested a couple of people despite knowing their alibis but are trying to pin the action on them.

A sixth person is on the run. The police are trying to play mind-fucking games by telling other comrades of the arrested that they can be released if he gives himself up. They are also apparently releasing “selected information” to comrades and the press, some (or all) which may be false and only be part of police manipulation tactics.

The judge ordered the comrades to be detained at least 30 days to avoid a flight risk. During this time, the prosecutor will try to build his case. They are trying to get “international terrorism” charges pressed. This would carry a sentence of up to 15 years.

An international solidarity campaign is already started. On Monday there should be demos at embassies in a few European cities.

There is a web page setup where you can send letters to the government. Please help us to bomb their mailboxes TODAY. Let them arrive on Monday with an inbox full of protests.

Time for solidarity, τώρα είναι η ώρα για αλληλεγγύη

It’s not the right time now to think of our differences while the anarchosyndicalists are detained. We anarchists solve our differences outside prison. Now it’s the time to show our solidarity!
